Spatial digital worlds are becoming part of daily life. VR headsets, AR glasses, mixed reality devices. The line between physical and virtual space is blurring. CryptoCubes were built for this future: sculptures that exist across virtual galleries, AR experiences, and spatial environments.

The cube as a purely human-made form, easily represented in both physical and digital worlds, yet it doesn't exist perfectly in nature. A symbol of digital creation. A fundamental form capable of building infinite complexity. The number 256 comes from the 8-bit color channel: values range from 0 to 255, exactly 256 possible values per channel (Red, Green, Blue). Each cube represents a point in this digital color space, its RGB value shaping its appearance.

Digital Sculptures

256 digital sculptures derived from cubes. Every piece exists as an ERC-721 token with its own geometry, color profile, and structure. Three properties shape a CryptoCube: structural form (Landmark), RGB value influence (Color), and density (Volume). Together: 256 siblings, clearly related, individually unique.

Onchain Permanence

The collection launched in 2020 with onchain permanence as the goal. Three years later, it was achieved: every cube's data was optimized, compressed, and stored directly on Ethereum. The x,y,z,scale, color values that generate each 3D model live entirely on the blockchain. As long as Ethereum exists, CryptoCubes exist.

Playground & Spatial World

CryptoCubes works across spatial worlds: virtual galleries, AR experiences, and a dedicated playground. The playground lets you animate any cube, and export in multiple formats: MP4, GIF, GLB, and more.

How Are They Made?

Each CryptoCube was generated algorithmically using a custom system built on cellular automata for complex 3D structures, color parameters from 0-255 defining each palette, and Gaussian noise influencing scale and position.

The generation process produced thousands of outputs. From these, 256 were carefully curated, each selected for its unique balance of color, volume, and shape. Some cubes are tall and spiky. Others are low and dense. Some have bold single colors. Others shift through gradients. All share the same DNA, yet each has its own personality.

The Story

In 2020. Han, a designer fresh out of architecture school, noticed something in the emerging NFT space: almost everything was flat. Very little existed in true 3D. He wrote a custom script, experimented with cellular automata, generated countless outputs, and curated 256 final pieces. The collection launched in October, released in waves of 50. Each wave sold out. By early 2021, all 256 cubes had found homes. The final cube, #255, sparked a bidding war among early supporters. All 256 cubes sold out. The originals now trade among collectors in the secondary market.

The story continues with CryptoCubes Creators: invited artists interpret a cube in their own style, each creating a unique 1 of 1 for the expanded collection.

FAQ

How many CryptoCubes are there?

256 total. 2 were burned by collectors, leaving 254 in circulation.

What is CryptoCubes Creators?

A separate collection of 1 of 1s by invited artists who use CryptoCubes in their work. It's important to note: these are different collections. CryptoCubes Creators is conceptually connected to the original CryptoCubes, creating a mutually connected history where artists honor CryptoCubes through their own interpretations.

Where can I buy one?

The original collection is sold out. Cubes are available on secondary marketplaces like OpenSea, or through auction houses including Sotheby's and Christie's.

Which CryptoCube is in LACMA permanent collection?

CryptoCube #43, donated by Cozomo de Medici, is part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) permanent collection.

Why are tokenID and CryptoCubeIDs different?

Although it doesn't affect functionality, tokenIDs and CryptoCubeIDs had a discrepancy during minting. Instead of reminting the entire collection, Han decided to keep it, accepting it as part of CryptoCubes' story. It's important to note that tokenIDs and CryptoCubeIDs can show a difference.
